Google Now Detecting Viruses

Google has identified a piece of malware that is redirecting unusual search traffic to its servers, prompting the company to warn affected users.

From the Google blog post mysteriously titled “Using data to protect people from malware”:

“Recently, we found some unusual search traffic while performing routine maintenance on one of our data centers. After collaborating with security engineers at several companies that were sending this modified traffic, we determined that the computers exhibiting this behavior were infected with a particular strain of malicious software, or “malware.” As a result of this discovery, today some people will see a prominent notification at the top of their Google web search results.”

Google’s Matt Cutts offers more detailson his Twitter account, apparently it only affects Windows computers and hijacks Google results. “That’s how we learned about it,” Cutts says about the “results hacking” thing. Google is recommending you follow the advice in its Help Center if you do receive the notification.

Google has never used its search engine as a massive malware warning system for users, although it did accidentally mark every website on the web as harmful in 2009.

Media sync from SD card. On devices that support a removable SD card, users can now load media files directly from the SD card to apps that use them.
Extended screen support API. For developers who want more precise control over their UI across the range of Android-powered devices, the platform’s screen support API is extended with new resource qualifiers and manifest attributes, to also allow targeting screens by their dimensions.

Google+ Approaches 18 Million Users

Google+ continues to set records as the fastest-growing social network in history, but the growth of Google+ has slowed somewhat over the past few days.

Ancestry.com co-founder Paul Allen posted his most recent analysis of Google+’s growth on his Google+ account Tuesday.

“Last week we saw two days where more than 2 million signed up in a single day,” Allen said in his post. “If that rate had continued, Google+ would have reached 20 million users by last Sunday night. But the last four days have averaged only 948,000 new users, and yesterday the site added only 763,000. Yesterday’s growth of 4.47% was the slowest viral growth since Google opened up invites back on July 6.”

Create RSS Feeds for Google+ Profiles

Now you can follow individual Google+ user streams via RSS feeds using a webapp called,Google Plus Feed.

The very first step is to find the profile ID of the user you want to follow via RSS. To do so, just visit a user’s Google Profile on Google Plus to get the ID.
The long number at the end of the URL is the profile ID. For example, the URL for technicia blog Google+ profile is

https://plus.google.com/109008933900993103361/about

Now you need to add it to the following url:

http://plusfeed.appspot.com/-

so the RSS feed of my profile would be http://plusfeed.appspot.com/109008933900993103361. Add that into Google Reader or another feed reader.
